Campaign for Fair Education Funding

* I’m teaming up with the Campaign for Fair Education Funding to speak out for students across Pennsylvania. Although I am receiving some form of compensation, all opinions are my own. #FairFundingPA

Choosing a school for your precious child is one of the most important things you will do as a parent. Education is a high priority on your list of t-do’s. No matter which path your children take in life a quality education will help them go further faster. According to The Pittsburgh Promise, education is the key to our future.

The time is NOW!

The time is NOW!

Having worked for Pittsburgh Public Schools for more than seven years as an education assistant, I have seen it all. Teachers buying their own supplies. Art, music and gym classes being cut from the schedules. Overcrowding in classrooms. This happened at every school that I was assigned. Why is it that some districts are graduating high honor students while others are barely graduating any students at all? Part of the reason is that not all school districts receive the same level of funding. Wait, What?

Imagine sitting at this desk all day because the school doesn't have computers to use.

A Pennsylvania study comparing changes in state test scores with changes in funding in all school districts between the 2003-04 and 2010-11 school years found that performance in the 50 lowest-achieving districts increased by 50 percent, on average, as Basic Education Funding to those districts increased by about 40 percent. [Education Law Center, 2011]

By contrast, as state school funding levels fell in the 2011 to 2014, many schools cut programs and increased class size [PASBO/PASA Survey, 2015) Student performance lagged among all students, but particularly for those facing additional challenges.

I have many friends that have moved out of the city of Pittsburgh for a “better school district”. Why not? We all want the best for our kids. Unfortunately, since I am barely getting by financially, I am unable to relocate out of the district. I have to make do with what is available to me. Thankfully, my son was able to get into a PreK room at my school, which helps tremendously with drop off and pick up. Not to mention the school is in an active community that has a lot of parent involvement. We are very blessed, but some families are not so lucky. Ok so what are we going to do about it?

For starters, we can speak out. That is why I have teamed up with The Campaign for Fair Education Funding.

Who is the Campaign for Fair Education Funding?

  • The Campaign for Fair Education Funding is a statewide non-partisan effort made up of organizations that, collectively, represent Pennsylvanians from every corner of the state. The campaign includes more than 50 education advocacy organizations; teachers and school administrators; representatives of charter schools and traditional public schools; urban and rural interests; business and organized labor; faith-based groups; and community groups. Why is the campaign needed?

  • Pennsylvania has the widest funding gap between wealthy and poor school districts of any state in the country. Per-pupil spending in Pennsylvania’s poorest districts is 33 percent less than in its wealthiest districts. Our children need a voice to fight for them. Every child deserves to have the resources available to them regardless if they are rich or poor.
