‘The Mom Con’…. Steel City Mom was there!

mom con collage

To those who braved the cold… to the women who knew there was something more to meeting face to face than meeting virtually… we have seen each other online for years… and now, its time to meet the mom-entrepreneurs and special guests invited to ‘the Mom Con‘.

Carri’s Take –

Picture it – – November 15, 2014… Pittsburgh, PA… Saturday morning… a time that most parents with school aged kids look forward to every week for a sleep in. I was sooooo looking forward to my sleep in all snuggly and cozy with my hubs and puppers!!

But then Carol texted me and told me to get my dress clothes ready for ‘the mom con’ tomorrow… Oh boy. First I have to wear dress clothes… and now I have to get up at 6am… its 23 degrees out there today! (not a typo… not 32… it was 23)…. This better be worth it!!

Carol had mentioned to me a few times about wanting to go to ‘the mom con’, and it looked interesting to me. But I just didn’t have the ticket money available. I had it in my head that I wasn’t going. I had the event completely dismissed from my thinking …until…. Carol and I both ended up winning a ticket right before the date from 2 separate raffles, so it was the luck of the draws that wanted us there that day. In fact, my car started right up despite the cold weather and the fact that my daughter left the car door cracked open and I was sure the lights on overnight in the car would have drained my battery…. karma, baby…KARMA! We were meant to be there.

YES….^^^ THIS IS MY DRESS BANDANA!

Within 2 minutes of arriving, Carol and I befriended others at ‘the mom con’, whom we chose to sit with throughout the seminar. All of those who joined our table were captivating, intelligent women whom had great stories to share about their careers and family lives. Shout out to @torlowski for being brave and making friends with a couple of crazy chicks from North Side. What else to expect from a “Mom Con”ference, correct?

So why go to ‘the mom con’? To meet other moms? Why do that? I can go sit in the free clinic at Magee and do that… Who goes to ‘the mom con’? New moms, veteran moms, moms to be, foster moms, grandmoms… but we all had one thing in common, and that was that we all wanted to be successful at something “other than” being a mom. We want careers that are callings, we want to create good things and generate change. What does it take to create change? This was the overall theme of every speaker’s presentation, as unique as each topic was. Each speaker left me with a powerful message to take home for food for thought, and intrigued me to follow-up to learn more beyond the conference. It was an excellent spectrum of information and communication. Our hats off to those who presented. Very well done!

6 hours of speeches? How did we get through that on this cold Saturday morning? FREE STARBUCKS ON TAP! OMG! Yes, as we sat and enjoyed some great speeches from motivational speakers and fellow mom-entrepreneurs and small business women, and we had hot coffee and Tazo tea available throughout the whole event. Amazing touch. Lunch… moms know what moms like… they served us a buffet of 2 types of salads, 4 types of sandwiches (vegan choices too), fresh fruit, munchies both salty and sweet (because we know our cycles need that boost of love in our diet). (Now I’m starting to feel like a heel for doubting the ticket price).

LOOK AT THAT COOKIE!!

So, I hope that the tidbits I learned at ‘the Mom Con’ will carry throughout the year and keep me as motivated as I was when we had left the Marriot (Cranberry, PA) on Saturday. But I do know one thing is for sure, I will be buying my ticket for ‘the mom con’ in advance next year (early bird price! yeah!). I know Carol will too… and we encourage ALL moms with an entrepreneurial mind to join us!

Carol’s Take –

So….. While searching online I found this event called Mom Con. I snickered and wondered what it would be like. Well months would pass and money got tighter and tighter. I gave up. I found every excuse why it wouldn’t be worth it.

Too expensive.
A waste of time.
It sounds stupid.
They just want to sell me stuff.
I am not good enough.

You name it I probably thought of it. I didn’t think I was on the same level as other Mom’s.

Early registration came and went. I tried to get a group of moms together to get the group discount. Everyone was busy or couldn’t afford it. One of my very good friends found out that they weren’t expecting more than 150 people. It made me think maybe it wasn’t worth the effort. Oh well move on.

Something was telling me that I needed to go to this event. Call it whatever you want but I felt like I had to go. So, I entered into a few giveaways for a free ticket.  One day I got an email from Nicole Wright who runs www.bloggernicole.com. Saying …. Congratulations! You are the winner of the Mom Con giveaway! OMG! I literally Laughed Out Loud. I couldn’t believe it. Well, I guess I am going. It’s a sign!

So I began to get nervous and mentally prepare for this. What am I going to wear? What am I going to say? Who is going to be there?

I told my partner in crime Carri and she was ecstatic! She began to work on a flyer that I could take with me. I told her don’t worry about it. I should take some business cards with me but I am out of printer ink. She said no problem and ran off some for me.

I felt bad. Carri needs to go with me. She is much better at the networking thing. So on Monday before the event I tried to win another ticket for her. It can’t hurt right? On Friday, I got this email… from More Than Mommies who run http://morethanmommies.net

“Congrats on winning the ticket for The Mom Con!

Sorry it is such short notice – the Mom Con starts at 8:30 tomorrow morning!”

I can not believe it! This is scary. I actually got chills. I sent Carri the email and this was her response.

woohooooooo

Lmao!

She picked me up and off we went.

From the minute I got there I was in awe! The amount of passionate, kind and helpful woman blew me away. The coffee, lunch, snacks and even the swag bag were top-notch. The speakers had me on the edge of my seat all day. Everyone was so pleasant and after I told them about the blog they offered to help. Who does that? I thought I would be viewed as “competition”. Nope not these ladies. They were very welcoming and open. They shared their experiences and struggles. They made me feel like I wasn’t a failure and doing my best is “Good Enough”. We shouldn’t tear each other down. We should be lifting up or fellow woman. To use the words of my brother-in-law….. I drank the Kool Aid and I liked it! 🙂

Here was the schedule: Click on each name to learn more about the speakers.
